There is perhaps nothing sadder than the idea of someone eating all alone on Thanksgiving, but for many Americans that are away from friends and family, it’s a very real concern. Which is why a diner in Northville, Michigan, called George’s Senate Coney Island Restaurant offers free meals on Thanksgiving for those who are all alone.

The restaurant has been offering this kind service for the last 10 years, but it only recently went viral when a passerby snapped a photo of the sign on the window and posted it on the social media site Reddit.

Restaurateur George Dimopoulos told ABC News that his generous offer stems from an intimate knowledge of how hard it is to be alone on family holidays. He left home and moved to Athens at the age of 12, where he often had to beg for food, then immigrated to the U.S. at 23, where he launched a string of successful Greek restaurants.

“The reason I do this is because I was alone one time,” he said. “I remember the good times and bad times.”

He also said that he doesn’t bother with trying to figure out whether or not someone is taking advantage of his kind deal.

“I don’t question people when they ask for food,” he said. “If they are
alone, I give it to them anyway. I can see the way they look.”

Now that’s the kind of generosity that feeds the stomach and the soul.
